Biography
Growing up in North Texas, versatile saxophonist and recording engineer Rob Brown gained an appreciation for classical music from a very young age. Rob began his musical training on the piano, and eventually fell in love with the tone concept of the classical saxophone after a formative concert with The Dallas Winds. Armed with his passion for music and his knowledge of the recording arts, Rob aims to realize not only his own musical dreams, but also the dreams of both his peers and students.
Rob earned his degree in the Recording Arts and Sciences from Peabody Conservatory under the instruction of famous recording engineers Scott Metcalfe and Ed Tetreault. Throughout his time at Peabody, Rob recorded, mixed, and mastered myriad ensembles ranging from full orchestras to jazz combo groups and even local metal bands. In 2019, Rob took on an internship at Audio Dallas Recording Studio under the direction of Paul Osborne, assisting with the recording of several rap, bluegrass, and R&B projects. Rob further honed his recording ability in the summer of 2024 when he worked at the Music Academy of the West as their Audio Engineer for over 200 events. In early 2026, Rob started a position at the University of Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters as their Audio Engineer and Video Specialist. In addition to this job, Rob’s wide experience in the realm of recording has allowed him to pursue freelance recording with his own array of microphones, cameras, preamplifiers, and other high-fidelity AV equipment.
As a professional saxophonist, Rob has been a member of myriad ensembles including The Laurel Trio and ATLAS Quartet, with the latter advancing to the semi-finals of the Plowman Chamber Music Competition in 2023. In 2018, he won the Ruby’s Artist Grant to commission a new work for saxophone quartet and electronics - Tides by Alexandra Gardner - furthering his love for the electroacoustic medium. In 2022, Rob worked with both CNSNC, a Baltimore-based contemporary music composer group, and The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center on The Ocean’s Cry, a series of pieces written for piano, percussion, and saxophone that focus on the need for ocean preservation. In his current work, Rob frequently works alongside emerging composers to create music with social impact.
Over the course of his music education, Rob has studied primarily with Carrie Koffman, Gary Louie, and Donald J. Fabian. With the teachings of these premiere pedagogues as inspiration, Rob eagerly shares his musical knowledge with a thriving studio of students of all ages and multiple instruments. He has mentored students who have placed in local and state competitions, and he frequently pushes his students to be better than they were yesterday.
Rob currently lives in Mishawaka, Indiana with his pet python, Monty.
